Workshop on working with diagrams as a way to hold things open to interpretation. The session starts from the "Curating Data" diagram, mapping curatorial operations like collecting, classifying, archiving, and displaying as relations that don't fully settle. Diagramming practice allows navigation between different readings of the same thing, treating non-closure as an affordance.
The process will be tested starting from a jar of ferments. Participants will trace what's in the jar and its surroundings, exploring how open and legible the diagram can remain.
Magdalena Tyźlik-Carver, Associate Professor of Digital Communication and Culture at Aarhus University, will lead the workshop. Her research focuses on posthuman curating, computational and data cultures, and the digital transformation in knowledge-making practices driven by AI, semantic web, and data infrastructures. She develops participatory methods for data practices beyond BigTech extractivism and expansive infrastructural politics using speculative methods and open data principles.
She has curated exhibitions and events including "Fermenting Data: Aarhus 8000-8220" (2021), "ScreenShots: Desire and Automated Image" (2019), and "Movement Code Notation" (2018). She is co-editor of "Curating Superintelligences. A Reader on AI and Future Curating" (2025) and "Executing Practices" (2018), and co-author of "Boundary Images" (2023).
